From October 2019 up to and including July 2023, I joined the game production of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum™ at Daedalic Entertainment GmbH, first as VFX & Technical Artist, later as Lead VFX & Technical Artist in a permanent full-time position.
The VFX department was a small team consisting of Johannes Popp and Martin Pitzing, together we were responsible for all VFX and TechArt throughout the entire game. This includes all kind of effects, special/animated shaders, post process effects and logic systems like fluids tools, fluid/foliage interaction, VFX light sources, or global VFX volumes. For maximum efficiency, we packed all effects into logic systems providing customization parameters, so that the level artists for themselves could easily place them in the various scenes and balance them to the scene lighting/environment individually, while keeping a fast and save way for us to still maintain them on a global scale.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum™ is an official adaptation with the license of Middle-earth Enterprises and based on the literary works of J. R. R. Tolkien. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum™ is set parallel to the events described in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring™ and is a stealth-action-adventure game. The player takes on the role of Gollum and accompanies him on his dangerous journey through Middle-earth. The narrated story shimmies along the known important cornerstones of his journey, but fills in previously unknown story gaps.
The game was developed with Unreal Engine 4, and released in May 2023 by Daedalic Entertainment GmbH [Developer/Publisher] and Nacon [Publisher] on PC, Playstation 5, Xbox Series, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
